Sherrlyn  > People > Sugar Guatemala
When I am not photographing weddings I am usually working on a story. I feel my mission in life is to help give a voice to those people who do not have power. Sugarcane workers in Guatemala suffer immensely. They are paid slave wages, and have very little rights. Someday I hope to go back and finish this story.

Sherrlyn > This boy's name is Perfect named after his father. Perfecto is 5 and has been working in the fields to help his family. It's a matter of having food for the day or not. Perfecto's lungs are most likely black from the cane and his eyes are swollen. I hope to go back someday in the near future to see how they are doing and document more of their lives. Some farms in the area have increased rights for workers.I only pray that someday Perfecto will also experience justice.
Sherrlyn > Sugar cane workers in Guatemala earn their pay by piecework. The younger men make up to $20. per day while the old men average $5.00 per day.
The cane fields are burned before harvest coating the cane with black sticky soot.

Sherrlyn > Sugarcane worker Perfecto and three of his seven children rest in front of their house. Perfecto's wife went to go shopping in town two days ago and has not returned. He stayed home from work to take care of his children but there is no food and the water is contaminated and undrinkable. They carried water from a local church. The smallest daughter has osteroporosis and needs regular medical attention. Perfecto has worked cane all of his life and with only one small five-year-old son to help perfecto feels that his life is closingin on him.
